Kazakhstan is the easiest way into Central Asia. Almaty sits at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains, with canyons, alpine lakes and desert within a day's drive. Our Kazakhstan trips start in Almaty and stay in 3-star hotels and village guesthouses.

Highlights

  • Big Almaty Lake and a 4–5 hour hike into the Tian Shan.
  • The red-rock walls of Charyn Canyon and the sunken forest of Kaindy Lake.
  • A horseback ride at the Kolsai lakes (about 5 hours on the summer trip).
  • The Singing Dune in Altyn-Emel National Park and the striped Aktau and Katutau mountains.
More about Kazakhstan: costs & getting there

Best time to go: mid-May to mid-September for hiking and riding. The lowlands are warm and dry in summer, while the lakes and mountains stay cooler. Winter, from late December to early March, brings snow and frozen lakes, at about −15 °C to 5 °C and colder in the mountains. 2027 summer departures: 15 May, 19 June, 24 July, 14 August and 11 September. Winter departures: 27 December 2026, 7 February and 28 February 2027.

In winter: frozen Kaindy Lake by local 4WD, the Alma-Arasan gorge and its hot springs, a falcon and eagle-hunting show, and a free day at Shymbulak mountain resort above Almaty.

What it costs: Kazakhstan Summer Adventure, 8 days, from SGD 2,569. Kazakhstan Winter Adventure, 7 days, from SGD 1,649. Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan Adventure, 10 days, from SGD 3,499. On top of that, budget for return flights (our trip pages estimate SGD 1,000–1,300 from Singapore), airport transfers on the summer and winter Kazakhstan trips, meals not listed in the itinerary, and travel insurance.

Getting there: fly into Almaty (ALA). AirAsia X flies non-stop from Kuala Lumpur, about 8 hours. There is no non-stop flight from Singapore; most people connect in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Seoul or Delhi, 12–15 hours in total. From Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific plans non-stop flights from 9 January 2027; until then, connect in Urumqi, Beijing, Seoul or Bangkok. The Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan trip picks you up at Almaty airport at 8am. The summer and winter Kazakhstan trips start in Almaty itself, and you make your own way from the airport.

Kyrgyzstan is the wilder choice: high pastures, herding families and mountain lakes, with rougher roads and simpler places to sleep. It's the trip for horse riding and nights in a yurt.

Highlights (depending on the trip)

  • Rafting in the Chon-Kemin valley, then riding across Song-Kul's alpine pastures and a night in a yurt camp.
  • Remote Kel-Suu lake near Kok-Kiya, in a border zone that needs a special permit. We arrange it before the trip.
  • The southern shore of Issyk-Kul, a hike in its canyons, and the Jeti-Ögüz gorge and Fairy Tale (Skazka) canyon.
  • Eagle hunters, a felt-making show in Kochkor and the Burana Tower near Bishkek.
More about Kyrgyzstan: costs & getting there

Best time to go: June to September, when herders move up to the summer pastures. Our 2027 departures run from mid-May to mid-September (Kyrgyzstan Summer Adventure: 16 May, 12 June, 17 July, 7 August and 18 September). Song-Kul lake sits at about 3,000 m, so nights are cold even in summer, and snow on the passes is possible in May and September. Travellers on late-season departures found the river rafting cold, so pack warm layers.

Also on the Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan trip: mountain biking near Karakol and the Ak-Suu hot springs.

What it costs: Kyrgyzstan Summer Adventure, 8 days, from SGD 2,509. Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan Adventure, 10 days, from SGD 3,499. You stay in 3-star hotels in Bishkek and Karakol, village guesthouses and yurt camps with shared bathrooms.

Getting there: the Kyrgyzstan Summer Adventure starts and ends in Bishkek, and airport transfers aren't included. No airline flies non-stop to Bishkek (FRU) from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong or Taipei. Common connections are via Almaty, Tashkent, Istanbul or Urumqi, and via Guangzhou from Hong Kong. The Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan trip starts and ends in Almaty and crosses the border by road, so you only need flights to Almaty.

Uzbekistan is Central Asia's history trip: blue-tiled madrasas, old trading cities and long desert drives. Our 3 Stans Silk Road Expedition starts in Tashkent and crosses into Tajikistan and Turkmenistan by land, so you see all three without arranging the borders yourself. It is also our only trip to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Highlights

  • Tashkent, then the Afrosiyob high-speed train to Samarkand and Registan Square.
  • A crossing into Tajikistan for the Seven Lakes (Marguzor) and ancient ruins.
  • Two days in Bukhara's madrasas and old town.
  • Turkmenistan: the white-marble capital Ashgabat, ancient Nisa, and a night in a desert yurt camp near the Darvaza gas crater in the Karakum.
More about the Silk Road trip: costs & getting there

Best time to go: spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October). Summer in Bukhara, Khiva and the Karakum desert is very hot. The 2027 departure is on 14 May.

Also on the route: Kunya-Urgench and the walled old town of Khiva.

What it costs: 3 Stans Silk Road Expedition, 12 days, from SGD 4,119. It includes 3-star hotels in twin rooms, one desert yurt night, the domestic flight from Mary to Ashgabat, the high-speed train and entrance fees. Every passport needs a visa for Turkmenistan, usually through an invitation letter that takes 3–4 weeks, so book early.

Getting there: fly into Tashkent (TAS). Pickup is at 6:30pm on day 1, so land before 6pm. Uzbekistan Airways flies non-stop from Kuala Lumpur (from 25 October 2026, about 8 hours). From Singapore, Hong Kong and Taipei, connect via Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Delhi or Istanbul; from Singapore that takes 11–15 hours.

Details by country and sources (checked 20 Oct 2026)

Kazakhstan

  • Singapore: visa-free, up to 30 days per entry.
  • Malaysia: visa-free, up to 30 days per entry.
  • Hong Kong SAR: visa-free, up to 14 days.
  • Taiwan: visa required: an e-visa or a pre-approved visa on arrival, both based on an invitation from a Kazakh operator. Check before booking.

Kyrgyzstan

  • Singapore: visa-free, 30 days in any 60-day period.
  • Malaysia: visa-free, up to 30 days.
  • Hong Kong SAR: visa-free, up to 30 days.
  • Taiwan: visa required, usually with an invitation from a Kyrgyz agency; allow several weeks. Check before booking.

Uzbekistan

  • Singapore: visa-free, 30 days.
  • Malaysia: visa-free, 30 days.
  • Hong Kong SAR: visa-free for 10 days when arriving by air. The 3 Stans trip lasts 12 days and re-enters Uzbekistan by land, so you need an e-visa from e-visa.gov.uz that covers every entry. A 30-day visa-free deal was agreed in June 2026 but hasn't started yet.
  • Taiwan: visa required. The visa on arrival (with a pre-approved invitation) works only at Tashkent airport, so it doesn't cover the land re-entries on the 3 Stans trip. Check before booking.

Tajikistan (3 Stans trip)

  • Singapore: visa-free, 30 days.
  • Malaysia: visa-free, 30 days.
  • Hong Kong SAR: e-visa from evisa.tj, usually 2–5 working days. The portal lists the land crossings from Uzbekistan as entry points.
  • Taiwan: e-visa from evisa.tj, as for Hong Kong.

Turkmenistan (3 Stans trip)

  • All four passports: visa required. The usual route is an invitation letter from a licensed Turkmen agency (3–4 weeks), then a visa issued on arrival at the border. Turkmenistan also opened a tourist e-visa on 1 October 2026 but hasn't published which nationalities and border crossings it covers. We'll tell you which route applies to your departure. Check before booking.

What travellers say about our Central Asia trips

  • “This trip provides an amazing range of activities and sights. It is suitable for those who are unfamiliar or new to Central Asia and wants a structured and guided experience as their introduction. Jia Hui T. · Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan Adventure - Across Canyons, Lakes & Nomadic Horse Trails · May 2026
  • “i loved the company, everyone was like-minded and adventurous while also being extremely sporty and chill at the same time. and of course the sights we saw, from city tours to the most remote of nomadic places, the tour was really well-organised by Tariel and coordinated among local drivers. i felt very safe in both countries and well taken care of, and the pace of the itinerary was good :) that made the sightseeing and experiencing of daily life/nomadic life really enjoyable. having a local guide from kyrgyzstan also made the trip feel like an experience with friends. will definitely come…”

Also in the region: Mongolia

Mongolia isn't one of the Stans, but it's the other big steppe trip we run, and it fits more easily into a week of leave: Gobi dunes, horse treks, ger camps and a winter trip with dog sledding. See our Mongolia group tours guide for all seven itineraries, or go straight to Central Mongolia for Leave Savers (7 days, from SGD 1,839), the trip our travellers have reviewed most.

Central Asia trips: your questions

Have questions? We got the answers!

Can I join on my own? Who else joins?

Yes. Most of our Central Asia travellers come alone. You share a twin room with a same-gender roommate (choose a friend in the app if you're coming together), and some trips offer a private-room upgrade. Travellers must be 18 or over, with no upper age limit. Most are in their mid-20s to 40s, travellers in their 50s have joined, and groups often mix nationalities.

How big are the groups?

6 to 16 travellers, plus a Sotravel trip leader and an English-speaking local guide.

Is my departure confirmed? When can I book flights?

A departure runs once it reaches its minimum group size. Each trip page shows whether a date is confirmed, and we'll message you as soon as yours is. Please don't book flights until your date is confirmed. If we cancel a departure, you choose between a cash refund and Sotravel credits.

How does payment work?

On many trips you can reserve a seat for SGD 0 — the trip page shows the options for your date. If you reserve for SGD 0, we charge a 20% deposit automatically when the departure is confirmed, and the balance closer to departure. Any Sotravel credits are used for the first charge. The Kazakhstan Winter Adventure doesn't offer the SGD 0 reservation, so you pay when you book. The exact payment dates for your departure are shown before you pay.

Can I change dates or cancel?

Before your departure is confirmed, you can switch to another date or trip. Once it's confirmed, the trip's cancellation policy applies; it's shown on the trip page and at checkout before you pay.

Are flights included? Which flight should I book?

International flights aren't included. Plan to arrive for the day-1 start: an 8am pickup at Almaty airport on the Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan trip, a 6:30pm pickup at Tashkent airport on the 3 Stans trip, and in Almaty or Bishkek on day 1 for the Kazakhstan Summer, Kazakhstan Winter and Kyrgyzstan Summer trips. Your trip instructions give recommended flight times. Transfers outside the scheduled pickup cost extra.

What's included, and what else should I budget for?

Included: accommodation, a private vehicle, English-speaking guides, the activities and entrance fees in the itinerary, and most meals (each trip page lists them day by day). Not included: international flights, travel insurance (we recommend it), visa fees where they apply, meals marked as not included, tips and personal spending. Airport transfers aren't included on the Kazakhstan Summer, Kazakhstan Winter and Kyrgyzstan Summer trips.

How fit do I need to be? I've never ridden a horse.

No riding or hiking experience is needed: every trip is beginner-friendly, though some days are long and active: up to 4–5 hours of hiking and about 5 hours on horseback on the Kazakhstan Summer trip, riding days and rafting in Kyrgyzstan, and drives of 5–7 hours. The "cycling" on the Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan trip is mountain biking. Song-Kul is at about 3,000 m. The 3 Stans trip is the gentlest, with light hiking and city walks.

What are the rooms and bathrooms like?

Mostly 3-star hotels and village guesthouses in twin rooms, often with a private bathroom. Yurt camps (Song-Kul, Kok-Kiya, Kelimche and the Karakum desert) are shared yurts with shared, sometimes outdoor, toilets and washrooms.

Do I need a visa?

Singapore and Malaysia passports don't need a visa for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan or Tajikistan on our trips. Hong Kong SAR passports are visa-free for Kazakhstan (14 days) and Kyrgyzstan (30 days), but need e-visas for Uzbekistan and Tajikistan on the 3 Stans trip. Turkmenistan needs a visa for every passport. Taiwan passports need visas for every country here, so talk to us before booking. The visa section above has the details and official sources; after you book, we send supporting documents and guidance.

Can I combine trips to see all five Stans?

The Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan Adventure and the 3 Stans Silk Road Expedition are designed to pair up; you fly from Almaty to Tashkent in between at your own cost. The 2027 dates don't line up back to back yet, so message us before booking if you want to combine them.

Is Central Asia safe, and can I eat halal or vegetarian?

Our groups travel with a leader, a local guide and a private vehicle. "I felt very safe in both countries and well taken care of," wrote Deanna L. after our Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan trip in May 2026. Check your government's travel advice before you go. Vegetarian meals can be arranged, and halal food is common in the region; tell us your needs when you book.
