Central Asia isn't a budget backpacker region any more, and it isn't Europe either. For 7 to 12 days on a guided small-group trip, the tour itself costs SGD 1,659 to 4,129 (MYR 5,280 to 13,180) per person with us, at prices checked on 27 October 2026. Flights, a few meals, tips and insurance come on top. Here's the full picture, using our own 2026–27 trips.

Each trip page lists every date with its live price: the Kazakhstan Winter Adventure, Kazakhstan Summer Adventure, Kyrgyzstan Summer Adventure, Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan Adventure and the 3 Stans Silk Road Expedition.

The Silk Road trip covers three countries and includes a domestic flight (Mary to Ashgabat in Turkmenistan) and the Afrosiyob high-speed train to Samarkand. On the winter trip, days 1 and 6 are self-guided in Almaty and Shymbulak, with no guide or transport.

What's included

On every Central Asia trip, the price covers:

  • Accommodation: twin-share hotels and guesthouses, plus yurt camps on the Kyrgyzstan and Silk Road routes.
  • Transport: transport between destinations and for the included excursions, plus the train and the domestic flight on the Silk Road trip.
  • People: an English-speaking local guide and a Sotravel trip leader.
  • Activities and entry fees in the itinerary: for example horse riding at the Kolsai lakes, Charyn Canyon and Altyn-Emel National Park on the Kazakhstan Summer trip, or mountain biking, the Ak-Suu hot springs and two riding days on the Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan trip.
  • Most meals. Each trip page lists breakfast, lunch and dinner day by day.

What to budget on top

Return flights. They aren't included, and fares depend on your dates and route, so check flights for your dates. From Kuala Lumpur, AirAsia X flies direct to Almaty, and Uzbekistan Airways flies direct to Tashkent. From Singapore there's no direct flight to either: our trip pages put the journey at 12–15 hours to Almaty and 11–15 hours to Tashkent with a connection. Please don't book flights until your departure is confirmed.

Airport transfers. The Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan and Silk Road trips include them. The Kazakhstan Summer, Kazakhstan Winter and Kyrgyzstan Summer trips don't, so you make your own way from the airport.

Meals not in the package. Between two and six lunches or dinners per trip, not counting arrival and departure days.

Travel insurance. Not included.

Visas. None for Singapore or Malaysia passports in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan or Tajikistan (as of October 2026). Kazakhstan is bringing in a free entry permit for visa-free visitors, applied for in the QazETA mobile app and compulsory from 1 July 2027. Turkmenistan, on the Silk Road trip, needs a visa for every passport, so budget for it.

Tips and extras. Tips aren't included, and neither are drinks, souvenirs or optional activities on free days.

A worked example. Kazakhstan Summer from Singapore: SGD 2,449 for the tour (price checked 27 October 2026), plus your return flight to Almaty, your own meals on free evenings, the airport taxi, insurance and tips.

So, is it worth it?

Travellers who've done it think so. After our August 2026 departure, Lionell L. wrote: "The trip was well paced, many amazing sights and the guide has many interesting stories." Eng L., May 2026: "Itinerary and activities were planned well without feeling hectic." And from our earlier Kyrgyzstan expedition, Pei T. remembered the "amazing landscapes and scenery, immersive experiences with hiking, horseriding and cycling, authentic local yurt stays".

What you get for the money is access. A land crossing from Kazakhstan into Kyrgyzstan and back, a border-zone permit for the Kok-Kiya valley, horses and a yurt camp at Song-Kul, or a route through Turkmenistan take time and local contacts to arrange on your own. On a group trip, that is done for you.

It's fair to know the trade-offs before you pay:

  • Long drives. Some days on the Kazakhstan Summer trip involve 5–7 hours or more in the vehicle.
  • Simple nights. The yurt camps on the Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan trip have shared bathrooms.
  • Real activity. The cycling on the Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan trip is a 4–5 hour mountain-bike ride in the Karakol valley.

How payment works

On many trips you can reserve a seat for SGD 0; the trip page shows the options for your date. If you reserve for SGD 0, the 20% deposit is charged automatically when your departure is confirmed, subject to the booking terms shown for your chosen departure, and the balance closer to departure. Any Sotravel credits go towards the first charge. The Kazakhstan Winter Adventure doesn't offer the SGD 0 reservation, so you pay when you book. The payment dates and cancellation policy for your departure are shown at checkout, before you pay.
