Best time to visit Central Asia: a month-by-month guide
Average temperatures for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, and when our 2026–27 trips run.
Central Asia has hot, dry summers and cold winters, and the numbers below show how big the swing is. The best month depends on which country you mean and what you want to do there.
The short answer
- Mountains of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan: June to August are the warmest months. Our mountain trips run from mid-May to late September.
- Uzbekistan's Silk Road cities: April–May or September–October. In July and August, average highs pass 32 °C.
- Snow in Kazakhstan: late December to early March, with frozen lakes, hot springs and the Shymbulak ski resort above Almaty.
- No departures start in October, November, March or April. Almaty's wettest months are April and May, and Samarkand's is March.

Summer in the mountains (mid-May to late September)
This is the season for Kazakhstan's lakes and canyons and Kyrgyzstan's horse country. In Kyrgyzstan, the month also changes the route. On our Kyrgyzstan Summer Adventure, May and June departures cross to the southern shore of Issyk-Kul for an eagle hunter, Skazka Canyon and Karakol. July to September departures go south instead, into the remote Kok-Kiya valley near the Chinese border, towards Kel-Suu lake. That area is a border zone, and the permit is arranged in advance as part of the trip.
May and early June are the wettest part of the season around Almaty: about 100 mm of rain a month in April and May, on roughly 20 days each. Higher up it's cooler: the trip notes for Kyrgyzstan warn that Song-Kul and Kok-Kiya are colder, especially in the evening and overnight. Song-Kul lake lies at about 3,000 m. "Got lucky with the weather and the views were AMAZING," wrote Sheryl F. after our late-May 2026 Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan trip.

July and August are the warmest months. Almaty averages a 30 °C high in July, while mountain areas around Kolsai and Kaindy are cooler. August is Almaty's driest month. If you want the Kyrgyzstan route to Kel-Suu, go between July and September.
September is cooler and still dry: Almaty averages 23 °C highs and 11 °C lows. Our trip notes for every summer route say the same thing: mountain weather changes fast, so bring layers.

Uzbekistan: spring or autumn
Uzbekistan's cities are hot and dry in midsummer. In July, Tashkent averages a 35.7 °C high and Samarkand 33.9 °C. Ashgabat in Turkmenistan, which our Silk Road trip also visits, averages 38.2 °C. Samarkand gets almost no rain from June to September.
Our 12-day Uzbekistan, Tajikistan & Turkmenistan expedition runs in spring: the 2027 departure leaves on 14 May, when Samarkand averages 26 °C highs and 13 °C lows. September and October are the other mild window, with Samarkand highs of 28 °C and 21 °C, and September is the drier of the two seasons.
Winter in Kazakhstan (late December to early March)
Almaty's average January high is −1 °C. Our trip notes put winter in the region at about −15 °C to 5 °C, and colder at Kolsai, Kaindy and the Shymbulak ski area. Our 7-day Kazakhstan Winter Adventure visits Charyn Canyon, rides on horseback to the second Kolsai lake, reaches Kaindy Lake by local 4WD, hikes the Alma-Arasan gorge to a waterfall and the hot springs, and visits a falcon centre with an eagle-hunting demonstration. Day 6 is free for Shymbulak or Almaty.
It is our lowest-priced Central Asia trip: from SGD 1,652 (MYR 5,284) for the February dates on 20 October 2026. The 27 December departure costs SGD 1,838 and is already confirmed. Unlike our summer trips, it doesn't offer the SGD 0 reservation, and airport transfers aren't included.
What changes from Singapore and Malaysia
- Popular dates fill early. On 20 October 2026, the 27 December Kazakhstan Winter departure had 13 of 16 places taken. The mid-May 2027 Kazakhstan Summer, Kyrgyzstan Summer and Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan departures had 12 of 16 each.
- Flights: from Kuala Lumpur, AirAsia X has flown direct to Almaty since March 2024, and both Uzbekistan Airways and AirAsia X fly direct to Tashkent. From Singapore, our trip pages note there's no direct flight to Almaty or Tashkent: allow 11–15 hours with a connection. From Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific plans direct Almaty flights from 9 January 2027, subject to regulatory approval.
- Kazakhstan's new entry permit: visa-free visitors, including Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong passports, will need a free online permit. It's phased in at Almaty airport from 1 January 2027 and compulsory from 1 July 2027.
- Don't book flights until your date is confirmed. A departure runs once it reaches its minimum group size, which is six travellers on these trips. Each trip page shows whether a date is confirmed.
- Clothes: coming from 30 °C at home, the surprise is how fast mountain weather changes. Pack warm layers, even in July.
