Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan: which of the Stans should you visit first?

How the three compare on scenery, comfort, flights and visas, with our 2027 small-group trips.

Central Asia's five "Stans" are Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. For a first trip from Singapore, Malaysia or Hong Kong, the real choice is between the first three: they're where almost all of our small-group trips go.

The short answer

  • Kazakhstan is the easiest start. Canyons, alpine lakes and a desert national park are within driving distance of Almaty, and you sleep in hotels or village guesthouses every night.
  • Kyrgyzstan is the one for horses and yurts. You raft, ride across high pastures and sleep in a yurt camp beside a mountain lake, with long drives through remote mountains.
  • Uzbekistan is the history trip: Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva, with more walking through old cities than hiking. Go in spring or autumn, because summer is very hot.
  • Can't choose between the first two? Our 10-day Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan trip does both and crosses the border by road.

Kazakhstan: the easy first Stan

Almaty sits at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains. On our 8-day Kazakhstan Summer Adventure, the group hikes 4–5 hours in the Trans-Ili Alatau range and visits Big Almaty Lake on day 2, walks the red-rock Valley of Castles in Charyn Canyon, sees the sunken forest of Kaindy Lake, rides for about 5 hours at the Kolsai lakes and ends in Altyn-Emel National Park with the Singing Dune and the colourful Aktau mountains. You spend four nights in Almaty, two in Saty village and one in Basshi village. Some days involve drives of 5–7 hours or more.

Kazakhstan is also the only one of the three we run in winter. The 7-day Kazakhstan Winter Adventure visits Kaindy Lake, rides to the second Kolsai lake, soaks in the Alma-Arasan hot springs and stops at a falcon centre, with a free day for the Shymbulak mountain resort.

Getting there: AirAsia X has flown direct between Kuala Lumpur and Almaty since March 2024. Our trip pages note there's no direct flight from Singapore: allow 12–15 hours with a connection. From Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific has announced direct Almaty flights from 9 January 2027, three times a week. Check the airline for your dates.

Kyrgyzstan: horses, yurts and high pastures

Kyrgyzstan is rougher and more remote. Our 8-day Kyrgyzstan Summer Adventure starts in Bishkek, rafts on the way to the Chon-Kemin valley, then crosses mountain passes to Song-Kul lake for a night in a yurt camp and a first ride of about 1–1.5 hours. After that, the route depends on the month:

  • May and June departures cross to the southern shore of Issyk-Kul for an eagle-hunting demonstration, Skazka (Fairy Tale) Canyon and Karakol.
  • July to September departures head south into the remote Kok-Kiya valley near the Chinese border, a border zone (the permit is arranged in advance as part of the trip), towards Kel-Suu lake.

Song-Kul lake lies at about 3,000 m. The trip notes warn that Song-Kul and Kok-Kiya are colder, especially in the evening and overnight, so bring warm layers.

Getting there: the trip starts and ends in Bishkek, and airport transfers aren't included, so check flights to Manas International Airport (FRU) before you book. If you'd rather fly into Almaty, the two-country trip below starts and ends there.

Uzbekistan: cities instead of mountains

Our 12-day 3 Stans Silk Road Expedition starts in Tashkent and takes the Afrosiyob high-speed train to Samarkand and Registan Square. It crosses into Tajikistan for a day at the Seven Lakes (Marguzor) and the ruins of ancient Penjikent, then spends two days in Bukhara. In Turkmenistan you see Merv, fly from Mary to Ashgabat, visit ancient Nisa and sleep in a desert yurt camp in the Karakum Desert on the way to Darvaza. The trip ends with Kunya-Urgench and the walled old town of Khiva. The trip is rated relaxed-pace: city walks, light hikes and drives between sites.

Season matters most here. The average daily high in Tashkent is 35.7 °C in July, according to the World Meteorological Organization, so this trip runs in spring. The 2027 departure is on 14 May, when Samarkand's average high is about 26 °C.

Getting there: Uzbekistan Airways and AirAsia X both fly direct from Kuala Lumpur to Tashkent. Our trip page notes there's no direct flight from Singapore: allow 11–15 hours with a connection. Transfers to and from Tashkent airport are included.

Or see two countries in one trip

The 10-day Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan Adventure starts and ends at Almaty airport, with an 8am pickup on day 1, and crosses the land border twice. In Kazakhstan you get Charyn Canyon, Kolsai Lake and Kaindy Lake. In Kyrgyzstan you get mountain biking in the Karakol valley, the Ak-Suu hot springs, the Jeti-Ögüz gorge, an eagle-hunting show and two days of horse riding around Kelimche and Song-Kul, sleeping in yurt camps with shared bathrooms. It is our most-reviewed Central Asia trip.

"This trip provides an amazing range of activities and sights. It is suitable for those who are unfamiliar or new to Central Asia and wants a structured and guided experience as their introduction," wrote Jia T. after the May 2026 departure. Sheryl F., on the same departure, said she was "happy to visit and accomplish so much within a 10 day trip."

Decide in 30 seconds

  • One week of leave, first time: Kazakhstan Summer or Kyrgyzstan Summer (8 days each).
  • A proper bed every night: Kazakhstan.
  • You want to ride and sleep in a yurt: Kyrgyzstan.
  • Architecture over hiking: Uzbekistan.
  • December to early March: Kazakhstan Winter, our only Stans trip in those months.
  • Flying from Kuala Lumpur: Almaty and Tashkent both have direct flights.
  • Hong Kong SAR or Taiwan passport: visa requirements depend on your passport and route. The Silk Road trip crosses several borders, so check every country and any repeat entries before booking. Start with the visa section of our Central Asia guide, then confirm the current rules with the relevant official authorities.

What our trips do differently

Groups of 6 to 16 travel with a Sotravel trip leader, an English-speaking local guide and private transport. The Kyrgyzstan border-zone permit is arranged as part of the trip. On most trips you can reserve a seat for SGD 0, and the 20% deposit is charged only when your departure is confirmed, subject to the booking terms shown for your chosen departure. The Kazakhstan Winter Adventure is the exception: you pay when you book.

One honest note: the Kazakhstan-only, Kyrgyzstan-only and Silk Road itineraries are new for 2027, so the reviews quoted here come from our Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan trip. All dates and prices are in our Central Asia group tours guide.

FAQ

Have questions? We got the answers!

What are the five Stans?

Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Our trips cover all five: Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan on their own or together, and Tajikistan and Turkmenistan on the Uzbekistan-based Silk Road expedition.

Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan: which is better for a first trip?

Kazakhstan if you want more comfort and a city base; Kyrgyzstan if riding and yurt nights matter more than hot showers. The scenery overlaps more than people expect: both have Tian Shan lakes and red-rock canyons.

Can I see all five Stans on one holiday?

Not on our 2027 dates. The Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan trip (16–25 May) and the Silk Road expedition (14–25 May) overlap, so you can't join both back to back. Message us if you want to combine them.

Which is easiest from Malaysia or Hong Kong?

From Kuala Lumpur, compare direct flights to Almaty and Tashkent. From Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific has announced direct Almaty flights from 9 January 2027. Before booking, check the current flight schedule and the visa and border-entry requirements for your passport and itinerary.
